Victor Moses

Really hoping Jose doesn't get rid of him. He may not be great but Mourinho got nearly 20 goals out of Jose Callejon (Callejon is really average) in the season where Real won the La Liga, maybe Moses won't get 20 but I'd like to see him get games and score a few more goals as well as set more up.

Look at the Bayern Munich XI. Full of world class talent. I think Moses is a squad player at best. He is really frustrating to watch at times.

Yeah, that's their starting XI.

Cech - Azpi, Ivanovic, Luiz, Cole - Ramires, Lampard, Oscar, Mata, Hazard - Torres

Our's isn't too bad, either.

Look at Bayern's bench. Do they have world-class players there, and in their reserves as well? No, they just have damned-good squad players like van Buyten, Pizarro, Shaqiri and Tymoshchuk.

Moses was direct and he scored goals and he was a genuine option. He's only 22 and he's going to improve his game... he worked hard as well and he is no push over for any full back in this league he's a tough lad. I can't see any winger in the world that is better then he is that would take his role in this Chelsea side because he ain't a starter.

I'm sorry, but you just can't say Moses is not Chelsea quality then go on to defend Marko Marin in the same breath. I was one of the people hyping Marko up, but he just failed to deliver. On the other hand, Victor is a great squad player who, despite having a bad end of season, still managed to score 11 goals for us this season. That's an excellent return for a squad player.

The difference between Moses and Marin is that if Victor is having a bad day in attack and things are not clicking for him, he still makes up for it with his work-rate. Unlike Marin, Moses defends superbly well and tracks back all the time. He really give a lot of defensive solidity to the flank he's playing on. That is why he was picked over Marin, because what he brings to the team is much more than what happens when he's on the ball.

So, Victor Moses will probably never be regarded as world class, so what? He's young and can only get better, he's homegrown, he's on low wages, and he is the type of player you want sitting on your bench as second/third option. You can have 10 "Messi"s and an Oliver Kahn in your team but you still won't win anything if you don't have squad players and depth in your team.

agreed, but, and it is a big 'but', is Moses good enough to win games?! So, we are in a pickle, and the manager looks at the bench and sees Moses sitting there and tells him, "you are next." So far he hasn't been able to win games or make a huge impact coming off the bench and I reckon he just doesn't have the ability. I guess I've just seen too many wingers come and go, dunno.

So, is being a squad player, a decent cheap (like you said) homegrown player good enough for Chelsea? Don't we need options that can make a difference coming off the bench? Look at City and United. They've got the likes of Dzeko, Rooney, Nani, Valencia, Giggs, Nasri, Hernandez, sitting on the bench.

That's the dilemma we have: develop youngsters, some of which have the ability to become great players, or have the strength in depth to win matches, at least as good as our rivals.

BTW, both Mickel and Moses will be representing Nigeria, if they catch the next flight to Rio that is (missed the first one because of bonus disputes), in the confederations cup. Think their first match is on Monday. It's a semi serious competition in my book; top countries are more worried about injuries than anything else, but they know it's a good opportunity to get their game going. Traditionally whoever wins the Conf cup does very poorly in the world cup that follows.

BTW, Marin hasn't really produced anything at Chelsea just yet, so there is no comparison.

Kalou was much better to be honest, the perfect squad player imo.

Kalou better than Moses? The guy was weak on the ball and turned it over way too many times. Moses can at least make something happen on the wings and beat defenders. Salomon is a better finisher, I'll give him that, but not the better player.

  • 2 weeks later...

i think moses may struggle next season. especially if kdb stays and plays on the right wing like he does for belgium

He's our only pure winger, so tactically, he provides something that none of our other players provide. I am confident he'll get game time next season.

He probably will ..... A bit at least. I just fear he might be left out a bit. Pun not intended.

Jose will love him. Direct and pacey, remember Arjen Robben (before he turned into a greedy let me shoot every time winger)?

Think Moses will be more like SWP here in terms of his role in the team.

Not saying Moses is useless or anything like that. A good squad player to have (can't expect to have the Hazards, Matas quality sitting on the bench as backups) and one that will play an important role for us throughout the season.

Depends on your vision of a pure winger, but I don't agree with that statement. I think Hazard is a natural winger, but it might be debatable as many people believe he excels in the number 10 role. Also when he is playing alongside Mata and Oscar they don't play strictly in their positions and regularly switch their places. And what about Schurrle? Now, tbh, I haven't seen that much of him, but he seems like a better, faster version of Moses with better finishing and long shots that provides some direct attacking approach from the wing. That being said I agree with the part that he still can bring his fair share of contribution to our squad and I'd like him to stay.

What I meant with "pure winger" is someone who hugs the touch the line and constantly sends in crosses into the box (not to mention that Moses is our best winger at tracking back and defending). All of our other options for the wings like to cut inside or make off the ball runs into the box which makes our attack narrow and that could be a problem, especially against teams that pack the box with defenders.

exactly what I'm thinking .. And I always call it "pure winger" too!
