Chelsea to offer £4m for Southampton prodigy Luke Shaw

Chelsea are poised to offer £4m for Southhampton's Luke Shaw. The young left-back, who turns 17 on 12 July, has made only one first-team appearance for the newly promoted Premier League side as a substitute in an FA Cup fourth-round replay against Millwall last season but is regarded as an extremely bright prospect.

A graduate of the Southampton academy which has recently produced Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Shaw has been monitored closely by Arsenal and Manchester City as well as Chelsea but his future now looks most likely to be at Stamford Bridge.

Shaw was born in Kingston upon Thames but joined Southampton's academy at the age of eight. Described as "technically very gifted" by Sir Trevor Brooking, he has played for the England Under-16 and Under-17 sides. Nigel Adkins, Southampton's manager, has previously pledged to do everything in his power to keep Shaw but may find the overtures of Roberto Di Matteo difficult to resist.

Ashley Cole has been the No1 left-back at Stamford Bridge since joining from Arsenal in 2006 with the 22-year-old Ryan Bertrand as back-up.

Good to see the club looking into the youth, and hopefully some stability with Roberto being here for some time can help introduce them to the big deal here, instead of rotting in the reserves!

Of course that wont happen, instead he will rot in the U21 :Goober:

On a serious not i have no information on this kid, but £4m seems very steep for a 16 year old.

A little odd considering Chelsea have two pretty good LB prospects in Bertrand and Van Aanholt, but I suppose you can never have enough depth and potential. Agree with Joker that 4m seems steep for an unproven teenage LB. Jordi Alba just went for 11M and he's one of the best LBs in the world. I guess Chelsea must think very highly of him.

People do realise that most of the fees involved are potential fees. We pay £4m if he makes it basically.

Not necessarily true. We'll obviously see if/when the deal goes down, but some of these deals involve a fee that rises with performance and some don't .

I'm beginning to think that Van Aanholt probably won't make it. He struggled to get any time on the pitch at Wigan, and his loan at Vitesse didn't go particularly well. Perhaps the club brass are thinking along the same lines.

Me too. But then again, I never thought Ryan will make it either, you never know.

Ryan showed his ability in the Championship. He was a fairly consistent LB for all the teams he played for...and I'm glad RDM gave him the chance.

PvA hasn't really shown much ability or consistency on his loan spells, apart from 3-4 decent games in his loan spell at Coventry way back in 2009.

The kid was touted as a possible successor to Van Bronckhorst at the LB spot for Netherlands...has failed to live up to expectations.

According to various dutch scouting reports, he's got a very poor attitude towards learning and he's quite lazy around the training ground.

We have a phenomenal replacement for Ashley in this year. Buying Shaw won't stop him and when we are in need of a replacement(if everything goes well) for Bertrand , Shaw would be 21- 22 and can step up. Besides , Shaw is a very good talent, atleast from what I have seen. I still got my heart set out on Adam Lallana, but that's another story.

Absolutely agree but then again I think that pretty much no young players are going to make it. Chelsea have probably had at least 50 highly-touted young players in the last 20 years and only one has become a world-class player, good enough to start for Chelsea (Terry) and only a few have ever contributed at all at a top level. (Huth, Carlton Cole, Jody Morris). Predicting success from academy players is a fool's game.

Definitely agree.

I think what we need to do though is treat the RA years as different. The academy structure now is a lot better. I'll still give it about 10 years but I believe we'll have produced maybe 4/5 quality talents by that time. We'll see.
