Gary Cahill is set to be offered a new contract by Chelsea.

The England defender still has three years left on his current deal but manager Jose Mourinho has been hugely impressed by the form of the 28-year-old this season.

Cahill and John Terry are his first choice as a central defensive pairing.

And the signs are now that Cahill will be rewarded with a new deal that will keep him at Stamford Bridge for the next four years.

Two years ago Chelsea had to beat off interest from both Arsenal and Tottenham for Cahill, paying Bolton £7million.

Mourinho is aware of the part to be played by Cahill in Chelsea’s push for three trophies still on offer this season – the Premier League, the Champions League and the FA Cup.

Cahill opted for Chelsea because he felt he had more chance of winning major honours.

That has been vindicated when he won the Champions League and the Europa League.

Deserved? Yeah, guess people are only saying that based on recent performances - credit to him - but won't be long before people take a 180 degrees turn and criticize him for his shortcomings as a defender again the minute he starts to do something silly.

And speaking of the new contract, he still has 3 years left in his current contract, is there any point of extending it by 1 year at this point?!

You do realise he is the one without the perm?

Thats a surprise for me, I really did not know he still had 3 years left. I really dont see any point at this moment, just remember Malouda, who signed a 3 years extension in 2009, just to spend tha last year of his contract training with the kids.

Why those guys just dont wait 2 years before offering a new contract.

Thought he was absolutely fantastic today and that partnership with JT is looking stronger every game.

Now both him and JT are finally getting some proper protection from midfield they do look better indeed.

Been very pleasantly surprised by him this season. I always knew he could put in amazing last-ditch tackles but I used to say that the reason he puts so many of those in is because he puts himself in bad positions which necessitate those kinds of tackes... but he has been really solid (understatement) this season and has also been an attacking threat as shown today. Very pleased for him.
