Lukaku and Bertrand out of the UCL squad.

Andre Villas-Boas has left £20million striker Romelu Lukaku out of Chelsea's Champions League squad.

Lukaku, 18, has been sacrificed by Villas-Boas because Chelsea did not have enough 'homegrown' players to maximise their 25-man squad.

Michael Essien has also been omitted because of his long-term knee injury and so has Ryan Bertrand, an English victim of spending so long on loan at different clubs.

Chelsea have only been able to name 22 players on their 'A List' for the Champions League because they only have John Terry who qualifies as one of four allotted 'club trained' places.

It is a problem every year. Last year, Paulo Ferreira missed out but since the sale of Yury Zhirkov and failure to sign Alvaro Pereira from Porto Ferriera will be needed as potential cover at left-back.

Frank Lampard, Daniel Sturridge, Ross Turnbull and Ashley Cole make up the four 'association trained' places. Teenagers Josh McEachran and Nathaniel Chalobah can both play because they qualify on the 'B List'.

Bertrand's omission makes a mockery of the homegrown rule. He is English born but fails to meet the criteria because he was not registered at Chelsea for three years between the ages of 15 and 21.

There will be another selection after the group stage.

I still can't get the point of putting Kalou on the list and Lukaku not...

Maybe Kalou is on the so call "A" list selection while Lukaku is under "B" list selection and that why he is unable to join the squad? Need read up on CL squad rules to confirm.

Salomon FUCKING Kalou gets in ahead of Lukaku, no justice in the world.

Talk about good ways to rock someone's confidence, not happy with AVB on this one. By all means, have Kalou's experience for the knockout rounds, but what's the point of playing a team like GENK and not playing someone like Lukaku, or even Bertrand? Fucking bollocks, not at all happy with AVB here!

Putting Ferreira in as well? We have Bosingwa and Ivan at RB, and then you can have Cole and Bertrand at LB, whilst Bosingwa can play there as well. Seriously, what the fuck? Really pissed off.

Bertrand can't be registered.

Cause Bertrand isn't locally trained, not a association trained/club trained , between the age of 15-21.

Yeah, I understood that. But, he could have been included instead of someone like Ferreira...
