Liverpool could be without their leading scorer Fernando Torres for the trip to Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday after he appeared to suffer a hamstring injury playing for Spain against France last night. Torres had to be substituted after 23 minutes of the match in Malaga when it became clear he was struggling and Spain's coach, Luis Aragones, replaced him with Daniel Guiza of Mallorca

Torres injury scare for Liverpool

Liverpool face an anxious wait over the fitness of Fernando Torres ahead of their Premier League game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The striker was forced off in Spain's 1-0 win over France on Wednesday with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

The 23-year-old held the back of his right leg after a challenge from defender Lilian Thuram and had to be substituted in the 22nd minute.

Torres is Liverpool's top scorer with 18 goals so far this season.

He was signed from Atletico Madrid last summer for a club record believed to be £26m.

Torres has now become invaluable to the out-of-form side and will be a major loss if he cannot face Chelsea as Liverpool chase Champions League qualification via a top four finish.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has confirmed that Fernando Torres will miss Sunday's clash with Chelsea.

Torres suffered a hamstring strain in Spain's friendly with France on Wednesday and will now sit out the trip to Stamford Bridge.

The striker had claimed that he asked to be taken off by coach Luis Aragones as a precaution after feeling a twinge, but it has now been revealed that the injury is worse than first feared.

The news comes as a major blow to Benitez who is already set to be without Daniel Agger, Andrei Voronin, Alvaro Arbeloa, Fabio Aurelio and the suspended Xabi Alonso for the game against Avram Grant's side.
